Synopsis: Through the use of animated songs, diagrams and motion graphics this tape shows how parasites invade the body. In a laboratory environment, a doctor shows children how parasites look under the microscope and some steps they can take to avoid contracting parasites. A “music video” segment encourages children to wash their hands. Many people, even doctors, think that parasites only exist in tropical countries far away from the USA. Maybe that was once true but not anymore. Jet travel has made us one world but it has also given parasites “wings.” |

Synopsis: Influenced by the coercive powers of consumerism and the mass media, North America women have come to judge their bodies according to the unrealistic standards of our culture’s beauty ideal. The ultra-lean silhouette of the fashion mannequin and the manipulated image of the magazine model have become not only physical standards, but also symbols of competence and success. In pursuit of this simulated, body-centered ideal, many women are laying waste to their energies and self-esteem, and going on to develop the serious eating disorders bulimia and anorexia. Strangely, this modern quest for the perfect body occurs in an era in which many women have established self-determining roles for themselves, both in the home and the workplace. The film probes this seeming paradox, exploring the personal and political factors that transform a woman’s body into an inappropriate symbol of power and accomplishment. The FAMINE WITHIN examines the kind of hunger that cannot be satisfied by food. |
