The Creative Process

STAINED GLASS

Picture

Artist Vince Filipone combines art and age-old techniques to create a stained glass window honoring the founder of Girard College. The entire process is shown from the first step, the drawing of the picture, to the final step, the hanging of the completed window.

As we follow Vince through this process the viewer will be amazed at all the different skills necessary to produce these beautiful stain glass windows. The artist must:

  • Draw the picture onto paper
  • Number each individual section
  • Cut out each section with a special three bladed scissors
  • Select the colors of glass that will be used
  • Cut out each section of glass to match the paper pattern
  • Assemble all of the pieces on a large piece of glass holding them in place with wax
  • Paint the sections that require more detail with a special paint that is made from finely ground glass
  • Etch the detailed image onto the glass by removing the dried paint with pointed instruments and brushes
  • Fire the etched pieces in the kiln
  • Fit all the pieces of glass together using lead came and then soldering them in place.
  • Hang the window

Even though this beautiful piece of art was produced in the twenty-first century it was created by following the same process that was used many centuries ago.
