Follow-up Activity

Write each letter of the alphabet on a separate piece of paper and then put them all in a cup.  Divide the class into teams.  Let students take turns pulling a letter out of the cup. See how many stand-alone words, that need to be capitalized, each team can come up with. You may want to set a time limit for each letter.  To further challenge students give the students a category (i.e. proper adjectives or geographic names etc.) instead of a letter of the alphabet. Just like before see how many stand-alone words, that need to be capitalized, each team can come up with.

Challenge Activity

Have the students read and mark every letter that should be a capital letter.

i was finally going on a vacation.  imagine me, charley chapters, finally being able to go to some exciting new places that i had only read about.

i really wanted my friend captain capital to come along but he was too busy explaining capital letters to anyone who would listen.  i called my mom to see if she would like to go on vacation with me.  mom told me she would love to but she had already volunteered to help the girl scouts this summer.  she also felt that going on a vacation would get in the way of her other summer project.  she was planning to read a book on president lincoln.  it was so thick she figured it would take her most of the summer to read it.  it looks like i was going on this vacation by myself.

i was filled with excitement just thinking about planning my adventure.  traveling to different places is a good way to make new friends.  planning a vacation always makes me thirsty so i grabbed a snapple from the fridge.

the first thing i did was to make a list of all the places and people i wanted to see and visit.  it would be fun to take a tour of the u.n. (united nations).  i also knew i wanted to see some plays in the new york theaters.  since history is one of my favorite subjects i would like to stop in philadelphia, pennsylvania to learn more about the declaration of independence. while in the eastern part of north america it would also be cool to see the atlantic ocean and visit some of the civil war battlefields.  i can’t take a vacation without visiting my canadian relatives.  i have a feeling this is going to be a very long vacation!

now the last thing i needed to decide was whether i should leave in july or august.

         i can’t wait to start!
