STUDY GUIDE FOR

AMAZING ANALOGIES

Key Words

Relationship

Connection

Comparison

Analogy

Why Use Analogies?

Explain something

Make things clearer

Make a connection

Emphasize a point

Follow-Up Activities

1. Show the students a group of picture analogies where one of the items is missing. Have the students draw the missing item that completes each analogy.

2. Make a list of at least 10 word analogies. Take the first pair of words from each analogy and list them in a separate column. Randomly change the order in which each pair is listed in the column. Take the second pair of words from each analogy and do the same. Put both lists on a sheet of paper, with space between the columns. Divide the class into several teams. Instruct the class that this is a timed exercise. They are to complete each analogy by matching the pairs that go together from the two columns. When time is up each team shares their analogies with the class. Each team has the right to challenge the analogy if they think the relationship or connection does not match. A prize goes to the team with the most word analogies.
