Synopsis: This documentary about America’s largest group of professional women is a comprehensive and compelling exploration of the sometimes fanciful mythology and often hard realities that have characterized the field of nursing since its inception in the mid-nineteenth century. Utilizing contemporary interviews, dramatic readings, film clips and a wealth of archival drawings and photographs, SENTIMENTAL WOMEN traced the history of nursing from its military beginnings to the present. The film looks at how technology is threatening to displace the compassion that has always been at the heart of nursing. |

Synopsis: In pre-industrial times, nurses had an independent, curative role to play in healing the sick, but the modern profession of nursing while still demanding altruism and dedication is locked into a supportive, secondary role. HANDMAIDENS AND BATTLEAXES examines why nursing evolved almost exclusively as a woman’s profession, and explores some of the psychological and sociological barriers that have held its progress in check. In tracing the history of nursing, the film reaches back to the earliest records of nurses at work in etchings, woodcuts and paintings, and looks at the persecution of these so-called “wisewomen” during the terrifying period of the witch trials. Using dramatic re-creations and photographic stills from nursing colleges and museums, HANDMAIDENS AND BATTLEAXES chronicles the development of nursing through the Victorian era and into modern times. |
